Insomniac clearly are NOT done with this generation of consoles…
They have announced the final chapter of their recent Ratchet and Clank ‘Future’ PS3 games. The PS3 has seen a lot of Ratchet and Clank games, from the three main single player campaigns set in the ‘Future’ narrative, to a 4 player co-op platformer and recently a competitive tower defence variation titled Q-Force, which is for PS3 and PSVita utilising cross-play.
Whilst there is a risk of over exposure (in contrast Mario normally gets no more than one 2D and one 3D outing per platform, and even then Nintendo are criticised), the titles have largely managed to maintain a high standard whilst offering top level (almost CGI/Toy Story quality) graphics, sound, story and narration and gameplay.
‘Nexus’ looks like it will be keeping the strengths of the series, such as the character development, crazy guns and lovely graphics whilst adding some new tricks. The game has a slightly ‘Mario Galaxy’ vibe to some of the levels, with the your character having to traverse areas of space by hoping from sphere/land mass to sphere, whilst trying to make use of gravity boots and what not.
Perhaps this will be the best and most well rounded Ratchet experience to date, coming on the eve of the leap to next gen. Some will of course be sad that such a great looking title won’t look even BETTER on PS4, but it’s clearly designed on an engine focused on the PS3, and after many years to mature and evolve such an engine, we can expect it to be one of the PS3’s main swan songs as it passes the baton to the PS4.
